The interior of the country is mainly divided between the gently undulating plains of Normandy and the Paris Basin in the north, and the Massif Central, the mountainous plateau in South/Central France, with the volcanic Auvergne Mountains and, farther south, the Cevennes.
The land is drained by several great rivers: the Seine, Loire, and Dordogne/Garonne flowing east-west, and the Saône/Rhône flowing south into the Mediterranean. The Rhine forms part of the eastern border with Germany.
