Restaurants and gift shops jostle each other for space along the pedestrian walkway part of 5th Avenue (as even many locals call Avenida Cinco). There are so many places here - beachside, or within a few blocks - that we selected only a sampling of delicious restaurants in the lower price range and a few exceptional eateries in the moderate range. Eat well and enjoy. See page 4 for price chart.

    Red Eye Cafe

Red Eye Cafe , El Alternativo (Av. 10 and Constituyentes, open 4 p.m.-midnight). They call their menu 'medicinal food for body and soul' and it's just what the doctor ordered. With well priced and tasty dishes, the restaurant has a bohemian following and, despite being outside the main tourist area, it can fill up at night with diners who linger at their tables. Asian and Afro- Brazilian specialties and a large selection of natural juices and salads.

    Daily Donuts

Daily Donuts (Av. 5 between Calles 8 and 10). There's a big choice of donuts in this tiny donut shop that has a small inviting eating area under a tree. Good coffee and heavy donuts make filling snack.

    Restaurant La Tarraya

Restaurant La Tarraya (beachfront between Calles 2 and 4). This little seafood restaurant and bar claims to be 'Born with the Town.' Its more important claim to fame is that it serves the best fresh fish and seafood around. Not much in the way of ambiance - except for the Caribbean sea a few feet away - it offers delicious fish at excellent prices.

    Sabor

Sabor (Av. 5 between Calles 2 and 4). This people-watching bakery is in the midst it all. Popular spot for light snacks, coffee, cakes and juice drinks. Pull up a chair on their patio and watch the world go by - Playa style. Mr. Baguette (Av. 5). Of all the eateries that line 5th Avenue, we found Mr. Baguette to be just right. Large meat or vegetarian sandwiches are served on crisp, toasted French bread. Enjoy a cold beer while you wait under one of their six umbrella-covered, streetside patio tables. A nice change.

    Karen's Grill & Pizzas

Karen's Grill & Pizzas (Av. 5 between Calles 2 and 4). More fun than gourmet, Karen's fills up with a boisterous crowd watching TV, music videos, or listening to live music. Italian and Mexican menu. Don't bother to ask for Karen - she ain't here.

    Limones Restaurant

Limones Restaurant (Av. 5 at Calle 6). This highly romantic restaurant set down in a hollow right on the pedestrian mall features international and French cuisine. Soft candlelight, numerous plants - even old wine bottles hanging from the ceiling - enhance the amorous atmosphere here. There's live music in their 'Red & Black' Bar. Daily specials help make this a special night out.

    Da Gabi Hotel & Restaurant

Da Gabi Hotel & Restaurant (Calle 12 at Av. 5). This is one of the best - if not the best - in the plethora of Italian restaurants in Playa. We had a delicious gourmet meal for only a few dollars more than we would have spent at a less-interesting sidewalk caf on the pedestrian walkway. The evening ambiance is romantic in a giant palapa decorated in twinkly lights. It's an excellent value with great Italian and Mexican cooking.
Worth considering is the Maya- styled Da Gabi Hotel next door. Reasonably priced rooms with fans sit near the beach.
